Umberto Merlo

Artist Painter, Rome

Umberto Merlo was born in Palermo in 1939. Once he obtained his high school diploma at "Istituto Statale d'Arte" (School of Arts) he moved to Milan where he attended the "Accademia del Nudo" (School of Nude) in Brera. Here he came into contact with the artistic and cultural atmosphere of the city. Later on, he moved to Rome and then to Velletri, (he lives in the countryside), where he decided to dedicate himself to the techniques of sculpture in ceramics. Although Umberto Merlo's works can verge sometimes on the abstract thanks to their unique and personal compositions, yet they still see the figure as their main element, that still manages to create a strong suggestion. Moreover, we can always appreciate in his works the fusion of a balanced mark, with memories and everyday reality.
